At Beacon Lighting, our ceiling fans are designed for a wide range of environments - from indoor living rooms to outdoor patios and coastal homes.
If you’re planning to install a ceiling fan outdoors, it’s important to choose one that’s built to handle moisture, humidity, and the elements.
Here’s a simple guide to help you choose the right fan for your outdoor space.
Alfresco Ceiling Fans
Our Alfresco ceiling fans are designed for use in covered outdoor areas such as patios, verandas and pergolas.
These fans are constructed from materials that can handle occasional humidity and moisture in the air, provided they’re installed in a fully undercover space.
To ensure proper performance and longevity, the area should have a minimum of two solid walls, offering protection from wind, dust, salt and any direct contact with water or rain.
Alfresco-rated fans are perfect for semi-outdoor areas that stay sheltered year-round, providing reliable airflow and comfort while maintaining their appearance over time.
Coastal Ceiling Fans
Our Coastal ceiling fans are designed for environments where there is greater exposure to salt and moisture in the air, such as homes near the coast.
They are made with corrosion-resistant materials and finishes, helping to protect against surface damage and extend the life of the fan. Like alfresco fans, coastal models must be fully undercover and protected from wind, dust, and direct contact with water or rain, but they can be installed in areas with a minimum of one solid wall.
Because of their enhanced materials, coastal-rated fans are also suitable for alfresco or indoor spaces, offering flexibility across multiple environments without compromising performance.
IP-Rated Ceiling Fans
IP Rated ceiling fans are designed to offer enhanced protection against dust and moisture. The IP (Ingress Protection) rating indicates how resistant the fan is to solid particles and water. The higher the rating, the greater the protection.
These fans are suitable for partially or fully exposed outdoor areas, depending on their specific IP rating. For example, a higher IP rating provides better resistance to wind-driven moisture and fine dust.
IP Rated fans are the most durable option in our range, offering the highest level of protection for outdoor environments.
Indoor Only Ceiling Fans
Fans that are not specifically marked as Alfresco, Coastal, or IP-rated are for indoor use only and should not be installed outdoors or in damp environments.
Installing an indoor fan outside can lead to damage, corrosion, and safety issues, and will void the product warranty.
